Common Reasons of a Frizzy Cosplay Wig

Before I give you the steps, let’s see the common reasons of a frizz wig, so next time, you will not make it frizzed again: There’s so many reasons why a frizzy cosplay wig is in this situation.

It’s a case to case basis when it comes for the reasons. Cosplay wigs will not frizz by itself, there’s a reason why it might happen to you. Without further ado, these are the 11 reasons of a frizzy cosplay wig:

This is a big one, especially for long wigs. Friction can happen from rubbing against your clothes, backpack, or even the back of your neck as you move around. The constant friction can cause the fibers to frizz and tangle.

Every collides of your wig to a foreign object is a minus one lifespan. It’s advisable to store your cosplay wigs ina safe storage in order to avoid friction. Exposing your cosplay wig from getting rubbed against any stuffs is very bad idea!

Using the wrong brush or brushing too harshly can be really damaging to wig fibers. Brushing wigs should be done gently, with a wide-tooth comb or a wig brush designed for synthetic hair. Brushing against tangles will only make them worse.

Don’t brush your cosplay wig when it’s dry. The stubborn tangles loves being brushed when it’s dry. My advice is here to brush your cosplay wig only after you washed it with water.

Heat Damage

This is a major no-no for synthetic wigs. Applying inappropriate amount of heat with styling tools like curling irons or straighteners will melt the fibers and cause frizzing. If your wig is heat-resistant, even then it’s best to use low heat settings.

Putting an excessive heat in your cosplay wig is the best way to destroy it. It’s recommendable to let a professional wig stylist take a job to take do synthetic wig ironing.

Keep in mind too that even your wig is heat-resistant, putting a harsh heat to it might damage the synthetic fibers. Don’t be confused between the word heat and immunity!

Static Cling

Synthetic fibers tend to build up static, which can cause the hairs to stand on end and make the wig frizzy. This can happen from dry air or even just taking the wig on and off.

Chemical Exposure

Cosplay wigs are like humans too, we hate toxic chemicals! Misusing wig styling chemicals might poison your cosplay wigs. It’s advisable to do a deep research on how much styling chemicals should you put in your wig to avoid frizzing.

Exposure to certain chemicals, such as hairspray, perfume, styling products, or even chlorine from swimming pools, can damage the fibers and lead to frizz.

When it comes to non-styling chemicals, never put your cosplay wig in a risky place like near the swimming pool. A one drop of chlorine can cause a big disaster to a synthetic fibers of your wig.

Nothing lasts forever in this world, including your synthetic wig. These synthetic fibers cannot thrive in this world for a lifetime and might degrade by itself overtime.

Over time, the fibers in a wig can naturally degrade due to wear and tear. This can cause them to become brittle and more susceptible to frizz.

Product Buildup

Cosplay wigs are not a Thanksgiving turkey that you should put so much stuff inside of it.  Be responsible in the amount of stuffs you should put in your synthetic wig to avoid issues like frizz.

Using too much styling product or not washing the wig regularly can cause product buildup on the fibers. This buildup weighs down the hair and makes it appear dull and frizzy. I’m reminding you again that wigs are not a Thanksgiving turkey! You are not obligated to stuff it up.

Exposing your cosplay wig in a humid atmosphere is a bad idea. These synthetic fibers are not a computer that has their own fan to cool themselves. So, you are responsible in keep it away from humidity

High humidity levels can cause synthetic fibers to absorb moisture from the air, leading them to swell and lose their shape. This results in a frizzy, unkempt appearance.

If you have an air conditioning system in your room, It’s advisable to let it stay in the room.

When we sweat, our bodies release salt and other minerals, which can leave a residue on wig fibers. This residue can build up over time, making the fibers stiff, sticky, and prone to frizz.

The issue is particularly noticeable in areas where the wig comes into contact with the skin, such as the nape of the neck or the forehead. A bodily sweats might be a reason of frizzy cosplay wig.

Regularly washing the wig can help prevent this buildup and keep the fibers smooth and frizz-free. Additionally, using a wig cap can create a barrier between the scalp and the wig, reducing sweat transfer.

Improper Storage

Just shoving your wig in a drawer isn’t ideal. Wigs should be stored on a wig stand or hung to help them keep their shape and prevent tangles that can lead to frizz.

You should take care of your cosplay wig like your ordinary belongings. Putting it to inappropriate place can damage the synthetic fibers in a short amount of time.

Low-Quality Synthetic Fibers

Most of cosplayers are buying a cheap or an overpriced low quality wig and they will complain later that it’s so frizzy at the end. I will give you a heads up that buying wigs from not reputable merchants are such a bad idea!

In my experience, I’m putting a two frizzy cosplay wigs (Kazuha and Wanderer), so I put more than 1/4 of water. It’s up to your own instinct if the water is enough for the amount of wigs that you will put.

Make sure that the fabric conditioner is dissolved before putting your frizzy cosplay wig in the basin. Putting your frizzy synthetic wig while the solution is not dissolved, it can discolor those stubborn fibers.

After you put your frizzy cosplay wig in the water, just let it stay there for 5-15 minutes. During this time period, all you need to do is to wait.

After 5-15 minutes of bathing your frizzy cosplay wig in the water solution that we made before, it’s now ready to be fixed! Put it out of the basin and brush the frizzy part of the wig like a gentleman.

If your frizzy cosplay wig has a severe tangling issue, it might be tempting to make the brushing harshly but this will make the situation more worse. If you’re traveling with a wig, braid or twist it loosely to prevent tangling in transit. Secure the ends with a soft hair tie or fabric to avoid damaging the fibers.
